Minnesota RollerGirls
We swam against the current of 15,000 Justin Timberlake fans streaming into Xcel Energy Center to get to The Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium. There we were to witness a whole different kind of pop — bone-crunching hits delivered by women you’d be sure to take to prom for fear of what they might do to you otherwise.
You may have already witnessed what I’m talking about on TV. Does RollerJam sound familiar? But even that isn’t an accurate depiction of what real roller derby is like.
The Minnesota RollerGirls are authentic and gritty. They’re black and blue knock-your-socks-off aggressive in their black and blue-striped tube socks. They are hell incarnate on four wheels.
What’s the best part of the Minnesota RollerGirls experience? It’s the fact fans can sit around the track, creating a flesh fence that skaters often puncture with frightening speed.
From the program: “If you sit track-side, be aware that a rollergirl could end up in your lap, knocking over your beer and generally causing chaos…However, if you find a Minnesota RollerGirl in your lap, you can not take her home.”
But fear not if a RollerGirl does biff into your brew. Wet Spot, the “janitorial artist” on staff, swings by on his LED-lit skates and promptly mops up the mess.
For $12, I challenge you to find a more entertaining sporting event in the Twin Cities. So, if you’re looking for something fun to do on March 3rd make sure you consider an evening date with the Atomic Bombshells, Garda Belts, Dagger Dolls and Rockits.
That is, unless you want them to come after you.
